The 2016 Champagne Bérêche et Fils Aÿ Grand Cru (Disgorged November 2023) is one of the finest expressions of Aÿ produced today. Crafted from 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay sourced from the Grand Cru parcels Froide Terre and Brise Pot, the wine spent an impressive 72 months on lees before disgorgement, building extraordinary depth, complexity and finesse. Bérêche is regarded as one of Champagne’s elite grower-producers, and this bottling beautifully captures the power and elegance of Aÿ’s historic terroir.
The nose offers crushed chalk, white flowers, red berry hints and subtle spice, while the palate is intense yet remarkably precise, with layers of citrus, pear, mineral, white pepper and almond. Richly textured but driven by vibrant acidity, it finishes long, saline and beautifully chalky with exceptional energy and balance. Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 97 points, describing it as "all class" and "a jewel of a wine."
