The 2016 Chalmers Aglianico Museum Release is a mature Heathcote red made from the southern Italian Aglianico variety. Grown at 215–225 metres on complex ironstone, basalt, dolerite and quartz soils, it shows plum and dark cherry with lifted lavender, dusty cocoa, spice and earthy notes.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and finely structured, with fresh acidity and firm, integrated tannins supporting plum, cocoa and savoury spice. The fruit was hand-picked, whole-berry wild fermented and basket pressed before ageing in chestnut botte, with additional bottle maturation giving the wine developed complexity while retaining freshness.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this Museum Release is a great choice for drinkers interested in mature Australian interpretations of Italian varieties. Chalmers recommends drinking through 2029. Pair with roasted duck, pork belly, truffle risotto, slow-cooked lamb or mushroom dishes.
