2018 Seville Estate Reserve Old Vine Shiraz

The 2018 Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz is a benchmark cool-climate Shiraz from the Yarra Valley, sourced from vines planted in 1972 at the estate vineyard in Seville. Crafted with wild yeast fermentation and partial whole-bunch inclusion, the wine reflects a more Rhône-inspired interpretation of Australian Shiraz — focused on spice, savoury complexity and structure rather than sheer weight.

The nose is intensely perfumed and layered, showing plum, blackberry and cassis alongside black pepper, violet, liquorice and earthy spice. Whole-bunch fermentation contributes lifted aromatics and savoury detail, while subtle oak integration adds texture without dominating the fruit.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully composed structure and fine persistent tannins. Red and dark berry fruit are supported by peppery spice, savoury herbs and mineral complexity, leading to a long, elegant and structured finish. The 2018 vintage has been highly acclaimed, including a strong 97-point rating from Halliday Wine Companion, highlighting its balance, texture and ageing potential through to 2041.

At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the best examples of “cool-climate Australian Syrah” we recommend for customers who enjoy Northern Rhône or elegant, savoury Shiraz styles. Compared to Barossa Shiraz, it’s lighter, more peppery and more mineral-driven, with much greater emphasis on finesse and structure. The old vines add depth and concentration while still retaining freshness.
