The 2022 Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah is a powerful yet finely structured expression from one of Victoria’s most exciting modern producers. Sourced from an east-facing site of 20+ year-old vines on the famed red Cambrian soils of the Mount Camel Range, it undergoes extended maturation of around three years in large-format Stockinger oak, allowing the wine to develop depth while retaining precision and freshness. The nose is deep and complex, showing dark plum, blackberry and black cherry layered with violet, cracked black pepper and dried herbs. There is a pronounced savoury dimension, with notes of olive, earth and subtle spice, alongside a distinctive mineral, ironstone edge that reflects the Heathcote terroir.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fine, structured tannins and vibrant acidity that provide both power and control. The fruit is dark and concentrated yet remains fresh and detailed, supported by layers of spice, earth and mineral nuance. Despite its intensity, the wine maintains a composed, linear profile, leading to a long, savoury and persistent finish with impressive depth and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is a standout Heathcote Syrah that beautifully balances regional power with a modern, Rhône-inspired sense of finesse. Compared to richer, heavier Shiraz styles, it offers more structure, spice and mineral tension while still delivering serious depth. The 2022 sits in a sweet spot - powerful yet controlled - making it compelling both now (with decanting) and over the long term. Cellar through 2038+ for full development. Excellent with lamb, beef, game meats or slow-cooked, savoury dishes.
