The 2021 Koomilya JC Block Shiraz is a remarkable single-block McLaren Vale Shiraz from Stephen Pannell’s historic Koomilya vineyard in Upper Tintara. Sourced from 49-year-old vines planted on ancient ironstone-rich slaty siltstone soils, the JC Block is known for producing a more elegant and aromatic expression of Shiraz while retaining the depth and structure that define the Koomilya range. The nose is intensely complex, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and blackberry alongside notes of clove, bay leaf, dried herbs, black pepper and earthy spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with layers of dark berry fruit supported by vibrant acidity and finely detailed tannins. Flavours of cassis, plum and black cherry are interwoven with savoury notes of cocoa, ironstone, dried herbs and spice, creating a wine of both power and finesse. Matured in large-format French oak to preserve vineyard character, the finish is exceptionally long and structured, with impressive purity and mineral complexity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding choice for Shiraz enthusiasts and collectors seeking a site-driven wine that balances concentration with elegance. Its combination of dark fruit, savoury complexity and polished tannins makes it a superb match for grilled rib-eye steak, slow-roasted lamb, beef cheeks and game dishes. While drinking beautifully with extended decanting, this wine has the structure and pedigree to evolve gracefully over the next 15–20 years.
