The 2019 Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Pur Sang Blanc is a profound and highly collectible Sauvignon Blanc from one of the Loire Valley’s most legendary domaines. Pur Sang ("pure-blooded") is Dagueneau’s flagship Pouilly-Fumé cuvée, produced from low-yielding vines on flinty, limestone-rich soils in the Pouilly-sur-Loire area. The late Didier Dagueneau transformed the reputation of Sauvignon Blanc through meticulous vineyard work, very low yields and élevage in large French oak, creating wines that possess the concentration, texture and ageing ability more commonly associated with Grand Cru white Burgundy.
The 2019 vintage is particularly impressive, combining ripe fruit concentration with the bright acidity and mineral tension essential for long-lived Loire Sauvignon. The wine is produced from old vines, with some parcels approaching 50 years of age, and is matured in French oak barrels, much of it larger-format, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity without overtly obvious oak character.
The bouquet is intensely aromatic but remarkably complex, opening with white peach, pear, lemon zest and grapefruit, followed by aromas of crushed stone, wet flint and white flowers. With air, the nose becomes increasingly exotic and savoury, revealing smoked mineral, beeswax, dried herbs, almond and subtle spice. The signature flinty character of Pur Sang is present but integrated rather than aggressively smoky, giving the wine extraordinary depth and aromatic persistence.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and exceptionally textured, with layers of ripe citrus, white peach, quince and pear supported by vibrant acidity. The oak fermentation and maturation contribute a creamy, almost Burgundian texture, while the limestone and flint soils provide a long mineral spine. There is an impressive combination of richness and freshness: the wine feels broad and powerful through the mid-palate but finishes with remarkable precision and energy.
The finish is very long and saline, with flavours of grapefruit, lemon oil, white peach, crushed rock and subtle smoky flint persisting for minutes. As the wine matures, expect increasingly complex notes of beeswax, lanolin, dried citrus, hazelnut and wet stone. This is Sauvignon Blanc at its most serious and age-worthy.
