The 2023 Nicolas-Jay Willamette Valley “L’Ensemble” Pinot Noir is a flagship Oregon red crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, blending fruit from multiple top vineyard sites across the Willamette Valley. Produced by the collaboration between Burgundian winemaker Jean-Nicolas Méo and Jay Boberg, it reflects a Burgundy-inspired philosophy, with native fermentation and French oak ageing (around 25–30% new oak) to enhance structure, depth and finesse. The nose is highly aromatic and layered, showing ripe cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, complemented by notes of violet, forest herbs and orange peel. There is added complexity from earthy nuances, tea leaf, spice and a subtle floral lift.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky, refined texture and fine, chalky tannins. Flavours of red and blue fruit are supported by bright acidity and a mineral backbone, leading to a long, elegant and nuanced finish. The style is polished and expressive, combining fruit purity with savoury complexity and classic Willamette Valley precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the standout New World Pinot Noirs and a great alternative to Burgundy at a more accessible level. It’s ideal for customers who enjoy perfumed, structured Pinot with both fruit and savoury depth. This is not heavy or overly oaky—it’s refined, layered and built on balance and finesse. Drink from 2025 or cellar for 8–12 years. Perfect with duck, lamb, mushroom dishes or refined dining.
