The 2023 Domaine du Pélican Arbois Chardonnay is a refined Jura Chardonnay from Domaine du Pélican, produced from vineyards around Arbois and Montigny-lès-Arsures in eastern France. The nose shows fresh lemon, green apple, pear and white peach, accompanied by subtle hazelnut, stony mineral notes and the savoury character associated with the marl-rich soils of the Jura.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with bright acidity and a gently textured feel, balancing citrus and orchard fruit with chalky minerality, almond and a lightly saline edge. Native-yeast fermentation and maturation for approximately ten months, principally in neutral 350- and 500-litre barrels, provide texture without allowing oak flavours to dominate. The finish is dry, persistent and mineral-driven, giving this Chardonnay a distinctly cool-climate Jura character.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Chardonnay drinkers looking beyond richer, more overtly oaked styles. Its combination of fresh acidity, restrained fruit, savoury complexity and mineral structure makes it particularly suited to the dining table. Enjoy from 2026 through approximately 2032, with further bottle age expected to develop additional nutty and savoury notes. Serve around 10–12°C and pair with pan-fried barramundi, grilled snapper, roast chicken with mushrooms, mushroom risotto, leek and Gruyère tart, or Comté cheese.
