The 2021 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards, renowned for producing Pinot Noir that combines sensual fruit, perfume and approachability with the structure expected of a great Grand Cru. Under the stewardship of David Croix, Camille Giroud has become one of Burgundy’s benchmark producers, focusing on terroir transparency, whole-bunch fermentation and minimal intervention. The 2021 vintage, shaped by a cooler growing season, produced wines of finesse, freshness and classical Burgundian balance.
The nose reveals raspberry, wild strawberry and red cherry layered with rose petal, spice and subtle earthy nuances. Around 50–60% whole bunch fermentation contributes aromatic lift and complexity, while the palate is silky and refined, offering vibrant red fruit, fine-grained tannins and a persistent mineral finish. Jasper Morris MW awarded the wine 92–96 points, describing it as stylish, refined and persistent, while Jancis Robinson highlighted its concentration, purity and distinctly mineral undertow.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A beautifully poised Grand Cru Burgundy that captures the elegance and precision of the 2021 vintage. More about finesse and detail than sheer power, it offers tremendous charm while retaining the pedigree and complexity expected from Charmes-Chambertin. Pair with roast duck, quail, pigeon, mushroom dishes, veal or truffle-infused cuisine. While approachable with extended decanting, this is a wine that will reward patience and should evolve gracefully from 2028 through 2045 and beyond.
