The 2022 Quealy Friulano is a distinctive Mornington Peninsula white made from organically grown Friulano at the Quealy family's Balnarring vineyard. Originally sourced from cuttings brought to Australia by Slovenian émigré Denis Pasut, the variety thrives in this cool maritime climate. The fruit spent 13 days on skins before barrel maturation, adding texture and complexity to this characterful wine.
The nose shows honeyed ginger, persimmon, citrus peel and exotic spice. The palate is savoury and textural, with grapefruit, cumquat and mandarin notes supported by gentle phenolic grip and bright natural acidity. Richly flavoured yet fresh, it finishes long and dry with impressive complexity. Stuart Knox awarded the wine 93 points, praising its depth, structure and food-friendly nature.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A fascinating alternative to Pinot Gris or skin-contact whites, offering plenty of texture and personality. Its savoury character makes it an excellent match for seafood pasta, roast chicken, pork dishes, antipasto and Mediterranean cuisine. Drinking beautifully now and should continue to evolve through 2028–2030.
