2018 Bindi Quartz Chardonnay
- Description
- Info
The 2018 Bindi Quartz Chardonnay is one of Australia’s greatest Chardonnays and the flagship white wine of the iconic Bindi estate in the Macedon Ranges. Produced from a tiny half-hectare parcel where quartz-rich soils are at their most concentrated, Quartz represents the pinnacle of Michael Dhillon’s pursuit of site expression. Matured for approximately 11 months in French oak, with around one-third new barrels, the wine combines extraordinary concentration with remarkable finesse, delivering a Chardonnay that comfortably sits alongside the finest white Burgundies. The exceptional 2018 vintage produced wines of outstanding balance and generosity, and Quartz is widely regarded as one of the standout Australian Chardonnays of the decade.
The nose is intensely complex and captivating, revealing aromas of ripe pear, white peach and preserved lemon layered with citrus blossom, jasmine and subtle smoky reduction. As the wine opens, notes of toasted hazelnut, oatmeal and almond cream emerge, complemented by hints of flint, wet stone and saline minerality. The aromatic profile is powerful yet remarkably refined, displaying immense depth while maintaining crystalline purity and freshness.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with extraordinary concentration, vibrant acidity and remarkable mineral drive. Layers of citrus, white stone fruits and orchard fruits unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by subtle lees-derived richness and beautifully integrated French oak. The quartz-rich soils contribute exceptional precision and tension, creating a wine that is simultaneously powerful and weightless. The texture is silky and expansive, yet every element remains perfectly defined. The finish is exceptionally long, focused and persistent, carrying lingering notes of lemon curd, toasted nuts, flint and crushed stone. The style is profound, combining immense fruit intensity with effortless elegance and world-class ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of Australia's greatest Chardonnay experiences and a must-have for serious collectors. Compared to the outstanding Kostas Rind Chardonnay, Quartz offers greater concentration, mineral intensity and layered complexity while retaining the extraordinary balance that defines all Bindi wines. It comfortably competes with Grand Cru white Burgundy in terms of precision, structure and longevity, yet retains a uniquely Australian identity shaped by the Macedon Ranges. Now with several years of bottle age, the 2018 vintage is beginning to reveal beautiful secondary complexity while still possessing decades of evolution ahead. Drink now with extended aeration or cellar confidently through to 2040 and beyond. Perfect with lobster, scallops, abalone, turbot, roast chicken with morels, truffle-infused poultry dishes or the finest seafood cuisine.
