BANNOCKBURN
Founded in 1974 by Stuart Hooper, Bannockburn Vineyards was born from a passion to craft Australian wines that could rival the greats of Burgundy. Hooper selected a site near the township of Bannockburn, recognizing its potential due to its low-fertility soils and a rich history of viticulture dating back to the 1870s.
Situated 25 kilometers northwest of Geelong, the estate encompasses 26 vineyard blocks planted with eight grape varieties and at least 16 clones. The soils, characterized by volcanic debris and ancient seabeds over limestone bedrock, contribute to the unique terroir. Bannockburn’s vineyards are meticulously tended, with a commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices.
Bannockburn produces all its wines from estate-grown fruit, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the vineyard’s character to shine. The winery’s portfolio includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Notably, the Serré vineyard, planted in 1984, is recognized as Australia’s oldest close-planted Pinot Noir vineyard.
Now under the stewardship of the third generation of the Hooper family, Bannockburn continues to honor its founder’s vision while embracing innovation. The winery celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, marking half a century of dedication to producing wines that reflect the unique character of the Moorabool Valley.
