The MMAD Vineyard’s oldest Shiraz vines were planted in 1941, growing in the fine Maslin sands of Blewitt Springs over a layer of ironstone, with cooling south-westerly sea breezes helping preserve natural acidity and aromatic lift. The 2023 vintage was notably long and cool, allowing the old vines to ripen slowly and evenly, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration without sacrificing finesse. The fruit was fermented in concrete and oak with a portion of whole bunches before maturation in older, larger French oak, allowing the vineyard character to remain firmly at the forefront.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe nose is beautifully perfumed and complex, revealing aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and blueberry, layered with violet, lavender and pressed rose petals. As the wine opens, more savoury nuances of black olive, star anise, clove, black pepper, mace and dusty cacao emerge, complemented by subtle ironstone and earthy character. There is a wonderful sense of aromatic lift throughout, with the cool vintage bringing a distinctly spicy and floral dimension to the dark fruit. The combination of perfume, savoury complexity and mineral character gives the wine an almost Rhône-like elegance while remaining unmistakably McLaren Vale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOn the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, silky and beautifully structured, with layers of blackberry, black cherry, plum and cassis supported by bright acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The fruit is concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with flavours of dark chocolate, cacao nib, liquorice, olive and dried herbs adding complexity through the mid-palate. The ironstone beneath the vineyard’s sandy soils contributes a subtle mineral edge, while the seasoned French oak provides texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The finish is long, savoury and energetic, with lingering dark berries, violet, spice, graphite and mineral freshness.
