Unlike virtually every serious white Burgundy around it, this is not Chardonnay. It is produced entirely from the domaine's unique \"Pinot Gouges\", a white mutation of Pinot Noir discovered by Henri Gouges in his own vineyard around 1930 and subsequently propagated by the family. In 1956, the Gouges family planted this mutation in La Perrière, a tiny Premier Cru parcel of only 0.41 hectares situated on the site of an ancient stone quarry. The exceptionally rocky, limestone-rich soils give the wine a distinctive mineral personality, while the minuscule vineyard makes production inherently tiny. Domaine Henri Gouges itself describes La Perrière as both \"confidential\" and \"fascinating\" - an entirely appropriate description for a white Premier Cru that is essentially impossible for another domaine to reproduce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2023 combines the generosity of the vintage with the naturally tense personality of this limestone site. Jasper Morris MW awarded 91 Points, describing pear and plum fruit that tightens towards an almost austere limestone finish, while praising the overall balance and accessibility. Neal Martin awarded 90 Points, finding honeysuckle and orchard fruit on the nose followed by orange rind, passionfruit and a spicy, ginger-inflected finish, recommending drinking it over the following five or six years. The result is quite different from Chardonnay: ripe pear, citrus and orchard fruit sit alongside flowers, orange peel and subtle exotic fruit, before the wine becomes increasingly stony and savoury through the finish.
